If you need to make money now, translation work is a fairly underserved niche. The lack of quality in translation matters a lot, and the price points are very high. That's why the skill and demand have exploded, to the point that decent translations are now the most sought-after skill in the world. Anyone with an internet connection can suddenly gain a legitimate skillset and a legitimate career. Anyone who wants to work fast and free is in luck, and those who want to work for themselves can offer their translation services and be paid to do it. Translation work has jumped from being quite expensive and quite exclusive to now being so cheap that it's a reasonably obvious path to succeeding at any skill or career.
With so many potential markets and customers, translation can quickly become hugely profitable. You can create new translations in a matter of minutes, and you can earn hundreds or even thousands of dollars for them. That's not to say that translation can't be done for less, but the reality is that it's easier to make a difference with a high-quality translation than it is to make a difference with a low-quality one.
If you want to know how much you can make now with translation work, you need to look into what costs are and the pricing structures. You need to figure out how much time it's going to take you to translate a particular document. You also need to determine the amount of work you can actually get done for the money you're going to spend. If you need to pay someone to help you translate something, you can't expect to get that much work done unless you're also getting paid to help them. And if you're working for free, you need to determine how much work you can actually complete in a relatively short time.
Once you know the amount of work you can do and the pricing structure, you can figure out how much you're willing to work. You'll then need to set the rate you're willing to take for that work. Even if you can get things done very cheaply and provide high-quality translations at very little time, your margins will be very low, and you will struggle to pay your bills if the business doesn't meet the sales metrics that make it worth it for you to do this work.
It's important to also determine what you're going to charge if you're going to charge a fee. That will mean you need to estimate what you would charge to translate a document for someone else. One thing that's helpful is that there's an enormous amount of free translation work out there, and it's a lot of it. There are enough documents out there that people want to translate that the market for translation work is robust. People are looking for translators, and if you work quickly and deliver quality work, then you can make a decent income.
To figure out how much you can charge, you can make an estimate for the time it's going to take to translate the document and the dollar value of the work. It's okay to make some estimates lower than the real value of the work. The vast majority of documents being translated have some sort of emotional value or some other sentimental value. Even if you translate an old text, for example, it may still have some emotional value for someone who used that language at some point, or it may hold historical value. If that's the case, you can reasonably estimate that there's some value attached to that work. That value is probably fairly high, and if you can make $100 or $500 for it, then you're doing very well.
If the value is very low, and if you're just translating a document that someone needs because they're spending hours in a hotel, then you can often lower your price. If you're translating something that can easily be translated by a computer program or by two people, and you're doing it at a cost of $2 to $4 per page and delivering a quality that's somewhere between good and very good, you can probably get paid at the cost of the work. And if you're working with someone else who can pay you for it, then you're likely to be paid for it.
When it comes to pricing, there are very few people out there that can provide the quantity of work and the quality of translation for a reasonable price. That's why I make a very large profit on my work. That's the obvious path to succeeding at any skill or career.
